dc.description Native-speakerism has long determined the pedagogical orientations and practices in ELT, and only in the last three decades, this ideology has received an increasing amount of criticism, which has been based on theoretical and empirical grounds. Some voices in applied linguistics have expressed concerns about the slowness of ideological change in the process of overcoming and dismantling native-speakerism. Yet, this chapter combines a brief overview of the historical advancements in the study of native-speakerism and a set of cutting-edge contemporary studies on this topic. It is initially argued that change is gradually taking place and permeating more and more layers of society, in spite of all the massive resistance that is still encountered. Next, an overview of the different chapters included in this edited volume is presented, thus offering a condensed sample of the depth and relevance of the studies that make up this book.
